Alison Tyler, Beacon’s Technical Director had the opportunity to teach Medical Products Packaging at RIT this spring as adjunct faculty. The class was a senior level elective and focused on Medical Device Packaging and also included Pharmaceutical Packaging. The entire course was modeled around ISO11607 and AAMI TIR22. The students learned about the different types of medical device packages, materials, sterilization and had assignments in which they utilized various ASTM standards, using AAMI TIR22 to guide them. A significant portion of the course was the final project. Each student was allowed to invent a medical device – name it, describe its function, create drawings of the device and eventually make a prototype of the device. Also included in the project were creative exercises like inventing a company, supply chain and transportation network – identifying hazards and special requirements and addressing them all in packaging design. The final projects included prototypes, Solid Works renderings of the device and packaging and a “mini” compliance document addressing many of the sections of ISO11607 / AAMI TIR 22 including Product Attributes and Design Inputs; Sterilization; Manufacturing Requirements and Packaging Equipment; Storage, Distribution and Handling; Marketing and Product/Package testing. In the class of 22 students – seven projects were selected as outstanding. These projects addressed each of the elements and many went above and beyond. The students each demonstrated their grasp of the concepts and technical information but also were able to apply the knowledge in their projects. Our congratulations to the students honored and best of luck to those who graduated this spring! Alison Tyler has been an adjunct faculty member at RIT since the 2005/2006 academic year and also serves on the RIT Packaging Science Industrial Advisory Board.
